This vintage silvertone clarinet brooch is modeled on the giant one that adorns New Orleans' Holiday Inn Downtown-Superdome, a mural commissioned to celebrate the neighborhood's status as the birthplace of jazz music. It comes with two historic postcards: a small one that served as the original backing for the brooch, and a larger one that shows the same building as the Downtown Howard Johnson's, which closed in 1973 after militant sniper Mark Essex concluded his citywide massacre there. Essex's rampage remains a dark milestone in New Orleans history.
Brooch measures approx. 3.5" x 0.5" (10cm x 1.7cm), is in excellent vintage condition with secure pin clasp. 5" x 3.5" backing card has some creasing and edge wear. 9" x 3.75" Howard Johnson's postcard has a creased corner and a small pin hole in upper left corner, is otherwise in excellent vintage condition.
