In Hindu and Buddhist cultures, a dvarapala is a gate guardian with a fearsome appearance. Traditionally placed outside temples and royal palaces to repel intruders, they may also be carried or worn as a protective charm. This dvarapala brooch from Thailand measures approx. 2" x 1" (5.5cm x 3cm). There appears to be a maker's mark on back, but I cannot make it out even with a jeweler's loupe. In excellent vintage condition with secure rollover pin clasp.
