Based on the image of the famous Buddhist monk Bodhidharma, Japanese Daruma dolls are symbols of good luck and perseverance. They are hollow and weighted at the bottom so that they will always roll upright when tipped over. When the doll is sold new, both of its eyes are usually blank. The buyer fills in one eye and makes a wish or a vow. When it comes true, the other eye is filled in. This Daruma has both eyes filled in. Measures approx. 4.5" tall x 4" wide (12cm x 10.5cm). In excellent vintage condition.
