This magnificent sterling silver coffee, tea service was created in Edinburgh Scotland by David Crichton Rait in 1839. D.C. Rait was one of the most renowned silversmiths of his time as can be attested to by this set. As you look at the pictures please zoom in on the fantastic detail of the chasing that covers the body of each piece. There is an engraved inscription on each piece which reads in Latin "NIL PENNA SED USUS" which translates to "BUT DO NOT USE A FEATHER". I don't know what that means but what ever it means it must have been significant to the owner of this beautiful set.
