The quality of workmanship on this piped and pleated two piece dress is sure to catch one’s eye!
Where does one begin? Front and Center we find 30 hand-stitched tucks on the front panel bordered by 24 (less 1 missing) exquisite cut steel buttons with matching royal blue, gold and silver tones dome centered with a ring around them looking almost like a planet with a ring around it. These are applied in sets of 3 with a space in between each set. The left side is wrought with perfect buttonholes as closures for the bodice. The asymmetrical collar folds down to at right center front but is otherwise upstanding as it wraps around the neck to the left side and then lies flat. I have displayed this wonderful gown with pleasure for many years and it is in excellent condition with only 2 tiny rub frays at the right shoulder seam and an almost invisible horizontal 1 inch split along the weave of the silk faille on the inner left wrist flap 2 inches up from the piping. Each two- piece sleeve is tailored with 3 V cuts, piped and lined, to expose the fine aged lace at the cuffs. The lace is in very good condition with a few small age spots hidden among the folds. The bodice is lined in brown cotton with no stays but all seams are hand whipped for a finishing touch. The back of the bodice is tailored to a person’s corseted tiny waist with a peplum to flair and float over a bustle. Two bows are pleated and tacked with tails to the waist in back.
The skirt is intended to be worn with a bustle and is generously pleated to allow for the fullness but some are tacked in place to retain their closed look. (A photo shows this. The white you see is the selvage of the silk. This outer skirt stops about 6 inches above the floor, showing the underskirt which is blue cotton lining down to the silk which displays the wonderful texture and weight of the tacked double pleated bottom for the final 4-inch row for a feminine effect. The inner hem is lined with black buckram up about 1 foot.

I would suggest moving one of the top left buttons down to where the one is shown missing. I also used a very fine tied collar to add contrast to the neckline for display.
With close examination, it appears the the right sleeve was let out to gain about a quarter inch from the elbow down at some time in the distant past. A little dust comes along free of charge, since this has only been gently vacuumed over the many years I have displayed it.

The bodice measurements:
13 inches long from center front to waist
17 inches long from center front neck to tip of front panel
Bust 31 inches measured under arms
Waist 22 inches
Sleeve 19 inches shoulder to wrist

Skirt measurements:
34.5 inches long in front
34.5 inches long in back
22 inch waist with old 1 inch extension.
The gown measures overall.
