This antique German bisque baby Hilda is just so cute who can even stand it? She just makes me want to pick her up and cuddle her! One of my all-time favorite antique dolls, whether as a dome head baby or wigged, I can never resist Kestner’s sought after Hilda! But when I am blessed to find a near mint doll throughout and with perfectly fitting adorable antique Christening gown, cape coat and bonnet, there is no more question. She has found a new home! By now, you may be getting used to the fact that Aunt Janie even offers the best for sale, because she buys only those dolls that "speak" to her...that have a personality... and are special examples of excellent artistry. Those collectors who have a discriminating eye will also recognize this important aspect of doll collecting. You need look no further than Aunt Janie's Doll Trunk!
The condition of Hilda's bisque is excellent, with no damages or repairs! A slightly raised tuft of hair at the center front was the sculptor’s way of hinting that she would still have had the lovely scent of a newborn. Wisps of painted blond hair cover her perfect head shape. The superb painting with creamy healthy complexion, rose bud lips, soft fly away brows and fine little lashes surrounding her blue sleep eyes, is everything the Kestner factory was known and praised for. This particular Hilda mold is said to be rarer than others that do not have the JDK Jr. 1914. Two little glass teeth show through her parted lips but there is no visible tongue. She is incised on the back of her head,
“Hilda – Copyright symbol - J. D. K. Jr. 1914 ges gesch No. 1070 Made in 10 Germany”.
She is one of the three molds of this face and is a darling 12” length from head to toe or the Kestner size system #10.
Five-piece composition baby bodies do not come much better than this one which appears not to have been played with. It has the original finish with only a bit of scuff on her right hand, but still shows the accent marks and blush on both hands and feet. There is the tiniest hint that her head has been turned side to side a few times since the body neck rim has a bit of wear and some paint from the body neck well is on her bisque neck but this is common and can be rubbed off the bisque with a bit of soap and water on a damp cloth.
Seldom will you find any antique baby doll with an original antique doll-size 3-piece ensemble as she would have been presented on her christening day. This set is in beautiful condition and fits her perfectly! The lace neckline is square which is unusual! Rows of vertical insertion, tucks and edge lace grace the front of her gown with added lace at the sleeves. You will find the original decorative ribbon applied at the bodice and the original closure of button and loop at the back neck.
She must have been born in the spring because her pique coat is sleeveless under the cape but the cape drapes down to her elbows and is edged with pretty lace and ties with matching silk ribbon. The coat has yellowed a bit with age so you might wish to bathe it in a little Oxi Clean dissolved in hot water to whiten it up. Her antique lace and shirred fabric strip bonnet, with silk ribbon ties, snugly conforms to her darling head shape and shows it off attractively! Now all she will need for you to provide are some soft booties! And ohh! The other things a doting Mama would provide! I have a special gift of an embroidered antique bib just her size which I will add to her ensemble if she finds a new home in the first month of listing. We can’t let that drool from teething affect the wonderful gown!
She is displayed in a wonderful antique youth bed or crib which is not included in this sale.
