Aunt Janie’s Doll Trunk is very pleased to offer a delectable treat today! We have all heard the expression, “rare as hen’s teeth”, meaning that it just doesn’t exist. Well, in all my 40 years in dolls, I have never seen a Rabery and Delphieu all original in the box, let alone just an RD box separate! This may be because I don’t get around enough but if you have, please send me a photo of another! It is now your opportunity to add this special piece of antiquity to your collection and enjoy stepping back in history! Its fun just to see the original box label!
CONDITION: In generally excellent condition, it appears this 20” pretty French Bebe, cousin of the FG, Steiner, Jumeau and Bru dolls has never been played with and is offered in her original, labeled. 23 x 9 x 5” box with lid, clothing, eye set and wig! I include the shoes she came with which are black, round toed shoes with one strap and rosettes with 4 little rhinestones on the toes, but I have photographed her with a pair of cream color leather tie shoes. Her head has been lit to check for any damage or flaws and none are present.
HEAD: Our sweet girl is marked R 1 D on the back of her poured bisque head in rather faint incised letters. This matches the size number on the box label. The original brown mohair wig in original set is still attached with the original glue to her original cork pate. I love her open mouth with well-crafted inset porcelain teeth greeting us with a demure smile and her deep bulbous blue paperweight eyes surrounded by fine lashes and graced with gentle multi-stroke arching brows above. Circa 1890’s, she is a later model, but with nicer than typical complexion of dolls mass produced. When considering the whole picture of her in her original box, this is a very wonderful treasure!
BODY: Her body is in overall excellent condition as well with the original finish throughout. I felt it important to restring her, since her limbs were loose, but now she can hold a pose and will be good for decades to come. She came to me with a little loss of paint on one heel, near the neck socket and joints.
CLOTHING: Ready for a special occasion, she owns more than the typical factory chemise. Her presentation is lovely but all pieces were stitched on. There is no damage to any of the pieces but the china silk has aged quite thin on the arms. The thread has been snipped in order to remove her dress and under clothing in order to show you her fine composition body. I have put everything back on just as it was found in the original fashion of thread closures. The clothing has no finished closures such as buttons or hooks as were intended for play time. Perhaps she was intended as a collectible doll only as were the JDK 243 Chinese babies and others. The original silk ribbons of her dress and cape are a lovely woven silk jacquard with little clover shamrock leaves. Over the years, the ribbon has melted in stress areas but still ties into a bow. Her original clothing include shoes and knit socks, cotton pantaloons and petticoat which have matching edge lace, a rarely found under blouse with elbow length sleeves, peachy pink fine see-through China silk dress with shaped collar, a fine net cape with shirred ribbon, tucks, floral ribbon accents and a very fine lace which matches the dress edge lace. Finally, her ensemble is completed with her silk bonnet embellished with embroidered accents, ribbon flowers and ribbon ties.
