The actual age of this natural, chocolate agate, cylinder seal is difficult to determine, but it seems certain that the intaglio has some age to it, judging by patina and wear. It is in style and detail from Mesopotamia, which would make it ancient. But I am sceptical. It is, however, quite charming, decorative and interesting. The intaglio depicts what appears to be attendants carrying food on their heads. My photo illustrates what the seal, rolled in clay, would create. The seal is 1 ¾ inches long (4.5 cm) x 16 mm diameter.
On either side of the agate seal, there are two handmade, vintage, traditional Afghan melon beads (16 mm), created using 18ct gold on silver on hardened resin, a technique learned from the craftsmen who came to Afghanistan in 330 BC with Alexander the Great.
Natural, whisky colour amber nuggets (19 mm) punctuate the necklace.
Natural, rock crystal, carved cylinders with many-sides, (roughly 22 mm x 15 mm) lighten the darkness of the browns. These crystals are full of inclusions, which give interest to a clear stone.
A russet colour, mahogany type wood cylinder (18 mm) echoes the agate tone.
Eight vintage, lost wax brass beads (14 mm) from West Africa, complete the design. Lost wax casting is a complex, ancient technique, finely perfected in West Africa.
A 14ct gold vermeil toggle clasp has been used because toggle clasps are easy to use and secure. My silver name label is attached at the clasp.
The necklaces come, like all my necklaces, with its own colour co-ordinated silk brocaded pouch bag, made by a Shanghai tailor.
The necklace is 19 inches long (48 cm).
