This is a classic English tea caddy, intended to be used for storing green and black tea, under lock and key. Tea was so expensive, it was felt necessary to keep it locked. But this caddy cannot be overlooked; it is far too grand and beautiful to hide away.
It was made by Philip Ashbery & Sons Ltd, around 1890, in Sheffield, England. It has the clear marking on the underside of the tea caddy.
Its elegant, fluted design has been embellished with floral etching, as well as on the scalloped lid. It has an oval shape and sits on four ball feet. There are two ringed lion mask handles on either side of the caddy. And the bone finial gives it further charm.
It measures from ringed handle to ringed handle 6 ¼” across, 4” deep, and 6 ¼” high.
It is in very good condition without scratches or dents. The photos unfortunately have reflections, which look like blemishes, BUT ARE NOT. There is no key available, but then no one needs to lock tea anymore. But this could also be used for small, delicate tea biscuits.
