If you look closely, the natural green jadeite clam has been intricately carved to open, revealing a prized, moveable jade pearl within. The clam is 1 ¼ inches long (3 cm), 1 inch wide (2.5 cm) and 16 mm deep. The clam symbolizes for the Chinese, a calm and quiet sense of life. And the pearl signifies the preciousness of life itself.
It hangs on a multi strand necklace of natural African Jade, or Verdite, which has been left unpolished so that it has a mat finish, and is rough cut. The ovals vary in size but are roughly 19 mm, in a. rich green with loads of texture and variation from the grain of the stone.
In between and to add to the mix, there are pyrite nuggets (16 mm), which gives the necklace a rich depth. Pyrite is known as “fools gold”.
The strands feed into two, handmade, vintage, traditional Afghan melon beads (14 mm), created using 18ct gold on silver on hardened resin, a technique learned from the craftsmen who came to Afghanistan in 330 BC with Alexander the Great.
A 14ct gold vermeil toggle clasp has been used because toggle clasps are easy to use and secure. My silver name label is attached at the clasp.
The necklaces come, like all my necklaces, with its own colour co-ordinated silk brocaded pouch bag, made by a Shanghai tailor.
The necklace is 16 inches (40.5 cm), with a 1 ¼ inch pendant drop (3 cm).
