Chinese sword slides were created for the blade of the sword to slide through and separate the blade from the handle. It is doubtful that this particular vintage, jade sword slide was ever used for this purpose. But they are highly collected items. This natural, sage green slide has been carved with wide ribs on one side, and left plain on the reverse side, which would have been unviewable in any case, considering where it would have been worn.
The slide is 2 inches long (5 cm), 1 inch wide (2.5 cm) and 19 mm deep.
In place of a sword’s blade, seven strands of stones and pearls slide through the implement.
There are two strands of baroque, cultured freshwater pearls in a peach tone (6 mm). Three strands of Botswana jade beads (4 mm). Two strands of carnelian cubes (6 mm), which alternate with vintage, gold on silver on hardened resin beads (8 mm and 14 mm), made in Afghanistan using their traditional techniques, learned from the craftsmen who came with Alexander the Great in 330 BC.
A 14ct gold vermeil toggle clasp has been used because toggle clasps are easy to use and secure. My silver name label is attached at the clasp.
The necklace comes, like all my necklaces, with its own colour co-ordinated silk brocaded pouch bag, made by a Shanghai tailor.
The necklace measures 18 inches long (45.5 cm).
