This vintage, English silk crepe christening/baptismal gown has a rather sweet story. It was found for a new mother’ baby boy’s christening, during World War II, who's husband was a pilot. Items in England were quite scare during the War and I believe this came from a relative’s keepsake. So it was clearly a very precious gown, enjoyed by mother and baby boy and his father who came back from the War, just fo the important Christening.
I suspect that it dates from about 1930, as it was older than the new baby boy in the 1940’s.
It is in good condition, although I found a small, faded rust spot, which I photographed. I carefully washed the gown and it has come out beautifully and fresh.
It has a delicate blue satin ribbon running through the sleeves and at the waist. It has lovely mother of pearl buttons at the back, all still intact, and there is also a tie.
The following are the measurements, which I presume would fit a 3 month old baby boy (the blue ribbon indicates the gender, in that era and for many, to this day).
Shoulders: 8 ½”
Sleeves: 5”
Inner Sleeve: 3”
Sleeve Opening: 3”
Bust: 10”
Neck: 3 ½”
Over all Length: 35”
Hem Width: 31”
A charming heirloom or can be used for a precious doll.
