The charming well-worked sterling silver pendant, inlaid with turquoise, is made in Afghanistan. Even on the sides, the silver has been carved, while on the back, there is more pattern. It is 1¼ inches by 1 ¼ inches and 9. 7 mm deep.
The necklace comprises eight, intricately worked, silver beads (15 mm x 15 mmm), in a purse shape design. These are made by the Karen hill tribes in Thailand.
Karen hill tribe Fair Trade silver is nearly 98% pure silver. I mostly choose to use their silver because each piece is like a miniature bit of sculpture, individually crafted and created. I know that artisans in Northern Thailand produce this unique silversmithing in small villages, involving whole families in the process. Their work is fairly paid, and as a result, their beads are much more expensive. But a family is supported and wonderful beads and jewellery are produced in high quality silver.
Alternating between the silver beads are carved stabilized turquoise beads (10 mm), carved in a lotus design.
Turquoise beads (5.5 mm) are at the back of the necklace to ensure that the necklace lies flatly.
The toggle clasp is also made by the Karen hill tribes, using twisted silver wires to create a rope design; toggle clasps are secure and easy to use; my silver name label is attached at the clasp.
The necklace comes, like all my necklaces, with it's own colour co-ordinated silk brocaded pouch bag, made by a Shanghai tailor.
The necklace is 17 ½ inches long with a 1¼ inch pendant drop.
