An unadorned natural grey jadeite Bi disc, lustrous and large (2 inches across x 17 mm deep) is attached to the necklace by three strands of cultured, baroque, freshwater pearls in grey ( 4mm). The Bi disc is important for the Chinese because it is a symbol of long life as well as harmony.
There are two baroque, silver cultured pearls (10.5 mm) at the centre and at the end of the necklace.
Two wonderfully crafted silver beads (16.5 mm) are handmade by the Karen hill tribes in Thailand.
These are followed by pebbles of tourmaline quartz (25 mm x 16 mm).
A brushed silver disc (14 mm) separates the two stones, one of which is a grey, triangular shaped quartz (20 mm).
A larger silver bead (22 mm) in a swirl pattern is also made by the Karen hill tribes.
Karen hill tribe Fair Trade silver is nearly 98% pure silver. I mostly choose to use their silver because each piece is like a miniature bit of sculpture, individually crafted and created. I know that artisans in Northern Thailand produce this unique silversmithing in small villages, involving whole families in the process. Their work is fairly paid, and as a result, their beads are much more expensive. But a family is supported and wonderful beads and jewellery are produced in high quality silver.
There is another grey quartz bead and then a grey agate cylinder bead (16 mm), followed by another silver pearl.
I have then knotted the silk/polyester cord with the traditional Chinese “flat knot” as well as the “button knot”. This is not only a classical Chinese technique, but it lightens the necklace and makes it quite comfortable to wear.
The toggle clasp is also made by the Karen hill tribes, using twisted silver wires to create a rope design; toggle clasps are secure and easy to use; my silver name label is attached at the clasp.
The necklace comes, like all my necklaces, with it's own colour co-ordinated silk brocaded pouch bag, made by a Shanghai tailor.
The necklace is 17 ½ inches long with a 2 -inch pendant drop.
