The colouring of this necklace is both rich and subtle. The reds of the jasper and the carnelian intaglio are a cross between burgundy and rust red. But the carnelian has a glow to it. The vintage, carved intaglio is of the winged horse, Pegasus, a symbol of poetry and wisdom. It is set into a finely carved 18 ct gold on silver pendant, made in Afghanistan. Its frame has a floral decoration, while at the back of the pendant, a dear prances in the forest, framed by a Greek key design. The pendant is 34 mm x 29 mm with the addition of the bale which allow it to hang, which in this case, 4 mm carnelian beads are attached to the bale and the actual necklace.

The necklace itself consists of vintage 18 ct gold on hardened resin beads (12.4 mm), made and etched in Afghanistan.

These Afghan beads use ancient techniques. The Afghani have been crafting gold for centuries. When Alexander the Great came to Afghanistan in 330 BC, his people brought many skills, one of which was working in gold. Like the Romans, centuries later, a yellow, 18 ct gold was used. But one of their techniques was to take sheet gold and work it onto hardened resin and then decorate it accordingly. For me, this handiwork and the yellow gold colour give the necklace warmth and character and complements the gems.

Sadly, these are now rare beads. Like all antiques, the supply can cease.

There are two, vintage nephrite jade bead, which are slightly calcified. These are carved, open work barrels (18 mm x 13 mm).

The jasper, a little like what the Chinese call “ox blood” in colour (25 mm x 12 mm).

Cloudy, slightly faceted vintage rock crystal cylinders (24 mm x 12 mm) have wear and inclusions which give a texture and authenticity. The stones are not damaged. The imperfections are part of the stone.

I have added traditional Chinese knotting, using their “flat and button knots” on a silk/polyester cord. This is not only a classical Chinese technique, but it lightens the necklace and makes it more comfortable to wear.

A gold filled on silver toggle clasp has been used for this necklace. Toggle clasps are easy to use and secure. My silver name label is attached at the clasp.

The necklace comes, like all my necklaces, with it's own colour co-ordinated silk brocaded pouch bag, made by a Shanghai tailor.

The necklace is 18 inches long, with a 1 ¾ inch pendant drop.
