This is such a stunning necklace. It simply looks wow on. The fullness of all these strands of whisky coloured natural amber nuggets creates a big impact in a very light necklace. This is real, Baltic amber. There are nine strands of amber, seven of varied sized nuggets of approximately 7 mm. And two strands of larger nuggets, at 10 mm.
All nine strands feed into two, 17 mm vintage, etched, handmade beads from Afghanistan, made of 18 ct gold on silver on hardened resin.
Using their traditional techniques, the Afghani have been crafting gold for centuries. When Alexander the Great came to Afghanistan in 330 BC, his people brought many skills, one of which was working in gold. Like the Romans, centuries later, a yellow, 18 ct gold was used. But one of their techniques was to take sheet gold and work it onto hardened resin and then decorate it accordingly. For me, this handiwork and the yellow gold colour give the necklace warmth and character and complements the gems.
I have been using these Afghanistan crafted gold beads for a very long time. But they are now rare beads and more costly than ever, if found.
Gold filled on silver toggle clasp are used. Toggle clasps are easy to use and secure. My silver name label is attached at the clasp.
The necklace comes, like all my necklaces, with it's own colour co-ordinated silk brocaded pouch bag, made by a Shanghai tailor.
The necklace is 17 ½ inches long while its width is nearly 3 inches.
