I do love a harmonious variety. This lustrous, natural Burma, jadeite Bi disc, in mottled colours of apple green and spinach ( 2 1/8 inches across x 11.4 mm deep), sets the tone of the necklace. All the elements have been chosen to contrast, compliment and harmonize with the Bi disc, which, for the Chinese, is a symbol of both harmony and long life. The idea is that the wearer gains these qualities.
The disc hangs on nuggets of whisky toned natural amber (5 mm) and aventurine beads (4 mm).
The necklace itself consists of the following natural elements, starting at the end of the necklace, after the traditional Chinese knotting.
Carnelian beads (17 mm) are followed by Burma jadeite beads (18.5 mm) in a mottled apple green and spinach.
Two hand carved, signed boxwood ojimi, (( 21.9mm x 19 mm) in the form of a mouse curled into a ball, with his tail wrapped around him, has inlaid horn eyes.
Ojime were carved, decorative toggles used by the Japanese to support their Inro, or box-like purse for men. These are not old pieces. But they were made by a master carver in China, whose wife I have known and purchased from for years.
Next to the ojimi are two hand carved bone melon beads (21 mm xv 17 mm), followed by 2 copal nuggets (23.7 mm x 14.7 mm).
Copal is like amber, a natural product of tree resin. But it is much younger than 40 million year old amber. Copal can be anywhere between 700 and over a million years…still not exactly a youngster.
Vintage handmade brass beads from West Africa, made by using the lost wax technique (22 mm).
And finally, two more natural, Burma jadeite, apple green beads (20.8 mm).
I have then knotted the silk/polyester cord with the traditional Chinese “flat knot” as well as the “button knot”. This is not only a classical Chinese technique, but it lightens the necklace and makes it quite comfortable to wear.
I have used a gold filled on silver toggle clasp. Toggle clasps are easy to use and secure. My silver name label is attached at the clasp.
The necklace comes, like all my necklaces, with it's own colour co-ordinated silk brocaded pouch bag, made by a Shanghai tailor.
The necklace is 17 inches long, with a 2 ¼ inch pendant drop.
