This vintage piece of deeply carved white jade (5 cm x 5 cm x 15.7 mm deep) displays the carver’s ability to create a lively scene. A larger dragon crawls toward a smaller dragon, probably one of his sons. There is something quite tender in their interaction. And the bigger dragon is carved to show his quite muscular limbs. The dragon is always a reminder of the Emperor, his power and dominance, but also his gentleness. The dragon is also an emblem of the universal source of energy, or “Chi’. The two dragons sit on top of a Bi disc, which is only seen at the back of the pendant. The Bi disc is a symbol of harmony and longevity.
The pendant hangs on 4mm mat onyx beads, on a necklace of sterling silver, natural onyx and vintage natural celadon and white jade nephrite beads.
Mat onyx cubes (14.11 mm) alternate with brushed silver cylinders made in India (14.11mm) , vintage carved celadon nephrite beads (18.7mm), and vintage, smooth,
Nephrite beads (18.5 mm). At the centre of the necklace, there are two octagonal silver beads from China (14 mm).
I have used a silver toggle clasp, made by the Karen hill tribes in Thailand. They have twisted the silver wire to make a rope design. Toggle clasps are easy to use and secure. My silver name label is attached at the clasp.
The necklace comes, like all my necklaces, with it's own colour co-ordinated silk brocaded pouch bag, made by a Shanghai tailor.
The necklace is 17 inches long with a 2 -inch pendant drop.
