This handmade forest green silk/polyester band supports a hand carved natural grey agate butterfly (2” by 2”). The butterfly is a symbol of long life (surprisingly) love and affection. The pendant hangs on natural jade beads (5mm) and vintage, traditionally made Afghan beads (13.5 mm). They are crafted of gold on silver on hardened resin, using the classical techniques of Afghanistan.
The Afghani have been crafting gold for centuries. When Alexander the Great came to Afghanistan, his people brought many skills, one of which was working in gold. Like the Romans, centuries later, a yellow, 18 ct gold was used. But one of the techniques was to take sheet gold and work it onto hardened resin and then decorate it accordingly.
With these beads, the 18 ct gold has been plated over silver and then over the resin. They have then been carved with gadroons. For me, this handiwork and its yellow gold colour gives the necklace warmth and character and complements the gems.
I have used a gold on silver toggle clasp. Toggle clasps are easy to use and secure. My silver name label is attached at the clasp.
The necklace comes, like all my necklaces, with it's own colour co-ordinated silk brocaded pouch bag, made by the Shanghai tailor.
The necklace is 17 inches long with a 2 ¾ inch pendant drop.
