I love the combination of sky blue and caramel. It goes so well with jeans and a white shirt.
This natural, whisky tone amber pendant in a free form shape is a lustrous piece that makes you want to finger it. It is. 1 ½ inch wide by 2 inches long and 17.8 mm deep, a substantial piece of amber, yet wonderfully light.
It hangs on 7.7 mm nuggets of natural blue chalcedony, on a necklace of natural, blue lace agate beads (20 mm). And these are indeed a forget-me-not blue.
Two endearing, hand carved, signed boxwood ojime owls, (18 mm x 16.5 mm), inlaid with horn eyes, echo the amber colour. They are lively and well carved.
Ojime were carved, decorative toggles used by the Japanese to support their Inro, or a box-like purse for men. These are not old pieces. But they are made by master carvers in China.
Owl qualities in Asia as well as in classical Mediterranean cultures, emphasized wisdom, intuition and protection.
Two natural nuggets of whisky toned amber (18.7 mm) sit underneath a vintage (rare) handmade 18K gold on brass on hardened resin beads (16 mm), made in Afghanistan. These Afghan gadrooned and etched beads were made using an ancient technique, learned when Alexander the Great came to Afghanistan, bringing artisans with many skills, one of which was working in gold. Like the Romans, centuries later, a yellow, 18 K gold was used. But one of the techniques used was to take sheet gold and work it onto hardened resin and then decorate it accordingly.
I have then knotted the silk/polyester cord with the traditional Chinese “flat knot” as well as the “button knot”. This is not only a classical Chinese technique, but it lightens the necklace and makes it quite comfortable to wear. It also sets off the design. The cord can be easily cleaned.
A vermeil toggle clasp has been used because toggle clasps are easy to use and secure. My silver name label is attached at the clasp.
The necklace comes, like all my necklaces, with its own colour co-ordinated silk brocaded pouch bag, made by a Shanghai tailor.
The necklace is 46 cm long (18 inches) with a 1 1/2 inh pendant drop.
