Being French, this has to be the epitome of elegant glamour. Any garment from France was considered to be the ultimate in luxury. And this vintage, 1920’s satin silk peignoir is no exception. It is in a classically Art Deco toned, soft pinkish-peach colour. Exquisitely designed with delicate satin covered buttons at the wrists and at the neck as a fastening, fine ecru handmade lace contrasts with the peach and has been generously added at the wrists, around the neck and down the closing panel to the floor, as well as a covering of lace on the shoulders and back. There is a satin silk tie closure in the front of the gown, as well as snaps at the top, along with the beautiful buttons.
This is indeed a very fine French peignoir. Its condition is on the whole, wonderful, considering how delicate this fabric is and its age, now 100 years old. But there is damage under the armholes and there has been a replacement panel under an arm. I have not repaired the garment but it could certainly be done professionally. Where the damage lies cannot be seen. But if it was to be worn, it would be best to have this repaired by a professional. It is worth doing because this is a very special, exquisite peignoir. In all my searches, I could not find anything comparable.
