This necklace evokes a Mediterranean sea, with its watery greens and blues.
Re-cycled glass from Ghana and China (varying in size form 12mm to 20 mm) , as well as the hand blown green/turquoise glass (20 mm), also from China, are given a sharp lift by the nuggets of chalcedony (15 mm),which have been heat treated to create a transparent, liquid-like turquoise colour..
In between glass and stones, brushed gold plated on silver discs (13 mm) create a rhythm and a link to the gold pendant.
The vintage, gold plated pendant (1 ½ inches long and 1 ¼ inches at its widest) was made in Afghanistan.
The panel has embossed on the front, a female portrait, designed in the Hellenistic style, with flowing locks, a high waisted dress with a scoop neck to reveal a necklace around her neck.
The Afghani have been crafting gold for centuries. When Alexander the Great came to Afghanistan, his people brought many skills, one of which was working in gold. But the Greek craftsman brought their Hellenistic designs as well as their techniques.
At the bottom of the pendant, hangs a drop of faceted, heat treated chalcedony, tying the pendant back into the necklace.
The clasp is a 14carat gold on silver toggle clasp. I prefer using toggle clasps because they are easy to use and quite secure.
The necklace comes, like all my necklaces, with it's own colour co-ordinated silk brocaded pouch bag, made by a Shanghai tailor.
The necklace is 18 inches long with a pendant drop of 2 inches.
