Chinese jade always carries with it a symbolism. But this particular piece of vintage jade (1 ½” long by 1” wide and 6.5mm deep) charmed me from the start. I simply could not resist buying it. The jade carver has taken a piece of white, nephrite jade and used the brown skin of the jade to create an enchanting piece. A plant, white in colour, is depicted growing out of the rocks, russet in tone (the skin of the jade). It’s meaning is one of endurance and adaptability: succeeding and thriving against the odds. Wonderful and inspiring.
The jade hangs on tiny vermeil discs which are attached to a necklace of richly coloured carnelian panels(1.5 mm wide and 5.4mm long) interspersed with faceted rough-cut peridot (1.8mm).
The two gadrooned gold melon beads (4.9mm) are made of “18 karat gold” covering hardened resin. This is a traditional Afghan technique.
For centuries, the Afghan artisans have worked with a rich, yellow “18 karat gold”, an expensive material. But being clever workers, they extended their skills by working the gold and covering elements, such as beads, of hardened resin, a much less expensive material. This is a time consuming craft that requires skill, and although the gold is not solid throughout, it is still expensive, and when purchased, even today, it is sold by the weight. Because it is this warm yellow gold, carefully worked, I love using their materials.
The toggle clasp is vermeil, a type of clasp I prefer because it is secure and easy to use.
The necklace is 19 inches long with a 1 1/2 inch pendant drop.
The necklace comes in it’s own silk brocade draw-string bag, colour coordinated with the necklace and made by a Shanghai tailor. In this case, the brocade will be a terracotta colour Chinese design. All my necklaces include a label describing the details of the necklace’s elements. And at the clasp, I have attached my silver name copyright label.
