You can imagine this chubby little boy crawling around the room, being bounced on his parent’s knees and getting kissed a lot. In particular, this is a Chinese boy, the centre of his parents’ hopes and affections. I believe it is less so now, but a boy was always considered vital to the well being of the family. A carved jade baby boy was almost a talisman to a woman to give birth to a boy. It could also send a message of triumph at the birth of a boy, for mother or grandmother. And in another sense, the baby is an emblem of fruitfulness, achievement, creativity.

This little chap of nephrite jade in a lovely celadon soft colour is hand carved and then etched and highlighted in tan etching. He is 1½ inches long and 1 inch high and 15 mm. deep.

He hangs on 3.4 mm etched silver beads, made by the Karen hill tribes in Thailand. They also made the hammered silver leaf discs at ¾ of an inch wide and 1 inch long. The two beads at the centre of the necklace (13 mm.) are of brushed silver lanterns made in China.

Karen hill tribe Fair Trade silver is nearly 98% pure silver. I mostly choose to use their silver because each piece is like a miniature bit of sculpture, individually crafted and created. I know that artisans in Northern Thailand produce this unique silversmithing in small villages, involving whole families in the process. Their work is fairly paid, and as a result, their beads are much more expensive. But a family is supported and wonderful beads and jewellery are produced in high quality silver.

The flat, round discs (25 mm. across and 6.6 mm. deep) are made of acid treated agate. This gives the stones (each a different pattern) an almost textured appearance.

I have used a silver toggle clasp. Toggle clasps are easy to use and quite secure. My silver name label is attached at the clasp.

The necklace is 19 ½ inches long with a 1 inch pendant drop.

The necklace comes, like all my necklaces, with it's own silk brocaded pouch bag, made by the Shanghai tailor.
