This antique Victorian rolled gold chain was intended to be used as a “muff” chain. The fur muff for keeping the hands warm, which Victorian and Edwardian ladies deemed necessary in wintry weather, would be attached to the spring clasp.
The chain, which is rolled gold, is what is known as “foxtail” in its design.
The slide, which is 1 cm x 1.5 cm, is set with tiny seed pearls and sapphire which is paste.
The chain measures 26 ½ inches long (67 cm), which means 93 inches of chain. Its slide is meant to slide at one’s own choice, but it does not lock.
The necklace comes, like all my necklaces, with its own colour co-ordinated silk brocaded pouch bag, made by a Shanghai tailor.
