Birmingham Sterling Button Hook, mid-1800s
This item is a lovely antique shoe or button hook. It measures 6.5" long and has a floral and ribbons design on each side. Each side also has an oval area for engraving, and on one side a monogram has been added; it appears to be the initials MSB. This piece has several hallmarks and likely maker's marks on the side, but unfortunately they are difficult to read. There are the word sterling, a mark that looks like a bugle, and the numbers 2890B. The hallmark's symbols are very difficult to read; the center symbol is definitely an anchor in a shield shape, which was used from 1773 to 1848. The symbols on each side of the anchor cannot be read, but the outline shape appears to best match those used from 1839 - 1848.
