This was originally a watch fob meant to hang from a man's pocket watch chain. With time men wore fewer pocket watches and their wives and daughters converted them to pendants. This one is a lovely rosy gold, probably pinchbeck; the intaglio is a finely carved carnelian. The carving depicts a Caesar in profile with his hair but without beard or crown - Julius or Caligula perhaps. The intaglio is likely from the early 1900s. The pendant is approximately 1 1/4 inch long, the chain is 18 inches long and hang-length is almost 22 inches. Item is in excellent vintage condition. Please view the pictures carefully as they are part of the description. Spots on the etching of the intaglio are not on the item but are a light reflection caused by light bouncing off of the etching lines.
