Finely carved floral mourning pendant and chain made from bog oak. Bog Oak is fossilized wood found in Ireland and the Victorians prized it for making mourning jewelry. This is a fine example and the bird, flowers. and leaves are a typical motif of the mourning period. Lightweight and easy to wear. Late 1880 through 1900. Approximate measurements are pendant 1 3/4 inches long by 1 3/8 inches wide, chain 22 inches long. In excellent condition. A true collector's piece.
Mourning jewelry was popular from the death of Queen Victoria's husband in 1861 through her death in 1901.
