Loet Vanderveen was born in Rotterdam, Holland in 1921. Vanderveen grew up near a zoo, and that was were he developed his love for animals.As an adult, he lived in various places in Europe and the United States as a fashion designer, but eventually moved to to California where he spent most of the time creating bronze sculptures of animals
