A stunning and very large oil on canvas painting by noted French artist Jean Ernest Aubert (1824-1906). The painting references the Classical Roman mythology of Cupid and his love inducing arrows, with scores of young women coming from far and wide to catch his glimpse and be struck with his arrow.
Here we find a more disinterested Cupid, as he stares off, his thoughts his own, contemplating pulling the string on his toy. The many beautiful women are expertly executed with varying degrees of clarity to add to the depth of the work. Signed and dated lower right "Jean-Aubert. 1882"
Measures Approx., 48 x 71.5 inches (53 x 76 inches framed)
Condition: Excellent. In excellent antique condition. The canvas has been re-backed and with replaced stretcher. Great original colors with no evidence of restoration or damage.
