The beautiful fingernail guards were worn to protected the long fingernails of the noble Chinese women who wore them. Long finger nails were a sign of wealth. Whether gold, gilded, enameled, tortoise shell, jade or silver, a fingernail guard proclaimed the wearer's social status.
The nail guard pictured for sale is hallmarked SILVER. Has beautiful enameled floral designs along with light green cabochon cut gemstones. A pin is attached to the back of the finger nail guard for fastening to clothing or decoration.
The measurements of the brooch is approximately 3 3/8" in length x 5/8" wide and tapers to 1/4".
The brooch is in excellent condition. The brooch can be polished. It has been lightly cleaned but has a patina.
The finger nail guards are from the 19th century.
