This one-of-a-kind pendant is a genuine Labradorite stone set in hand-forged sterling silver. This labradorite specimen is an unusually deep blue color with dark inclusions and beautiful iridescent flash of purple. Hung on a handmade sterling silver chain. Pendant is 1 in x 1/5 in; necklace measures 17 inches, but hook and eye clasp allows for some adjustment.
My maker's mark, "Intelligent Designs" is on the back of the piece.
Labradorite was named in Labrador, Canada, by Moravian missionaries in 1770, but Inuit legend described the stone much earlier. A warrior heard the call of the Northern Lights trapped within the rocks on the coast of Labrador. He freed most of the Aurora Borealis with his spear, yet some of lights remained trapped in the stones.
Labradorite is a member of the feldspar family, along with moonstone, orthoclase, amazonite, andesine, and sunstone. It is treasured for its remarkable play of iridescent colors (called labradorescence) caused by the reflection of light on the internal fractures in the mineral, dispersing it into different colors. Labradorite is believed to be a stone of transformation, awakening a sense of adventure. As such, it is said to support the wearer through difficult changes.
