This was original a lovely walnut box measuring 10 1/2" x 7 1/2" x 4 1/4". It could have been a sewing box or a letter box. It did have a lock. It no longer has that lock or key. A landscape has been burned into the top of the lid with mountains, railway, building and pole. Around the center is a scold leave design which has been painted black. The hinges are intact. There is a water ring on the top. There is damage to the side finishes from tape which was used at one time. I look at this box as a piece of folk art with an unknown history.
