The crotch mahogany veneer on this box is really nice. The grain and color are outstanding. In its day, it was a real prize. Today, it has several condition problems. The box is large for a tea caddy measuring 12" x 5 3/4" x 6". The inside is clean, but empty. Speculation is that it had 3 compartments. One on each end for storage, a center mixing container. It could possibly have been a humidor. The lid has a brass insert with a ring handle. The key hole has a mother-of-pearl escutcheon. There is stringing around the edges. This is were the condition problems are most prominent. The veneer outside the stinging inset is missing in many places. There is a large piece of veneer missing on the backside of the lid. The hinges are good and appear to be original. The lower portion of the lock is intact. The upper part is missing. The box is lovely in spite of its flaws. It can be used as is or restored.
