This lovely early 19th mahogany box is wonderful as a large antique box. It was originally a slope desk. The outside patina is nice. It has its original hinges. There is a brass name plate in the center of the lid. A shield shaped Mother-of Pearl escutcheon surrounds the key-hole. It amazingly has it lock and key which work. The box measures 16 5/8" x 10 3/8" x 6". There is no significant damage to the outside of the box. Around the top edge of the bottom, it appears someone tried to pry it open. Inside the box, the box has a reddish stain. One side of top part of the slope desk has been stained the red of the inside of the box. It has been secured with fabric tape and tacks. These was done many years ago. The bottom piece of wood to be the writing surface appears to be a recent addition. It has never been stained, covered, or attached. There are compartments for the ink wells and pens. This is a wonderful box. If wanting it to function as a lap desk, the inside would need restoration.
