This is an antique Elementary School Spelling Book. The Front cover names it, "The Elementary Spelling Book, being An Improvement on the American Spelling Book, by Noah Webster, The Latest Revised Edition" by the American Book Company. Sold by all the principal Booksellers throughout the United States of America and its territories. The frontis page has a black and white etching and states To Teachers and School Officers. It states Copyright 1880 and 1908 By G. & C. Merriam. The preface states that this "revision is to bring its notation into a correspondence with that of the recently issued Quarto Dictionary, in which a more extended system of orthoepical marks are adopted for the purpose of exhibiting the nicer discrimination of vowel sounds." This was 1866. The preface to the latest edition eliminated words that have become obsolete and eliminated orthoepical marks where they are clearly unnecessary. It also corrects a few errors and added four new pages of common words. The book measures 6 3/4" x 4 1/4". It has 174 pages. The back is paper covered hard board. The spine is good. All pages are in tact. There is wear to the corners of the cover and water stains. Photos look as though there is a page loose. That is a page from a different book used as a book mark.
