This is a RARE piece of jewelry from Mount Holyoke College - a private liberal arts women's college in South Hadley, Mass. The school was founded in 1837 and it is the oldest institution within the Seven Sisters schools... an alliance of East Coast liberal arts colleges that was originally created to provide women with an education equivalent to that provided in the then "men-only" Ivy League. Mount Holyoke Female Seminary as it was originally called received its collegiate charter in 1888, becoming Mount Holyoke Seminary and College. Both Vassar College and Wellesley College were patterned after Mt. Holyoke.
ANTIQUE collegiate jewelry Dates to the Early 1900's and is designed as the Official Seal of Mount Holyoke College. It has the dates '1887' and '1893' below the seal. In 1893, the seminary course was discontinued, and the new title Mount Holyoke College was authorized. Powder ~ Light Blue Enamel on Sterling Silver Pin was probably worn by a student or given as a gift to a parent.
ANTIQUE enameled pin from a highly regarded educational institution MEASURES ~ 2 1/2 Inches Top to Btm and is Marked "STERLING" on the Reverse and the Hallmark for the jewelry company that manufactured it (looks like a fancy "K" inside of a Shield). You will find this important piece woman's educational history to be in VERY GOOD CONDITION! NO signs of damage or excessive wear… has not been cleaned or polished – just as I found it. NO NICKS, CHIPS, CRACKS, Loss or Excessive Wear to the Enameling (even under 10 power magnification).
Would Make a SPECTACULAR addition to your Collegiate jewelry ~ memorabilia, stickpin or vintage fashion accessory collection!
