This piece was was created ~ designed by Joe Calafato who worked for 37 years in Pretoria, South Africa. He did his apprenticeship in the 1920's in Johannesburg under Jack Friedman a well known manufacturing jeweler. From 1938 until 1945, Joe worked for the South African Mint in the capacity of Jeweler and Silversmith in the Medal and Badge Department. He opened his own business in the late 1940's and sold it in 1984 after a long battle with cancer... he died in 1991 at the age of 79.
RARE South African Candida sterling brooch depicts a 3D (repousse) native woman walking with her right arm raised & her hand holding a tray or pot on her head (vessel for water?). FINELY Detailed oval ~ almond shape pin MEASURES ~ 2 Inches N-S... I love that the very top of the woman is beyond the 'framework' of the piece.
C.1950 silver pin is Marked on reverse "STER.SILV", "CANDIDA" and "S.AFRICA". Native South African pin is in AMAZING CONDITION! Wonderful Old Patina that perfectly highlights every detail... retains its ORIGINAL fully functional Locking Clasp, Hinge & Pin Stem.
