Antique Black Hat. Late Victorian or early Edwardian Era 1890-1910. Cute in a quirky way with the little twirl velvet ornament at the top. Pleated sides with a quality, thick, satin-like fabric. Unique.
From my Granny's home. From my great grandmas collection, passed down to granny, to my aunt...and I use to collect as well, but no longer. In great condition. It has some lint but we will clean it for you before shipping. Photos always make it look worse, especially on black! I don't photo shop.
The hat is small and could have been a mourning hat. Queen Victoria had strict rules when a woman became a widow and ladies wouldn't leave the house without a hat on. Widows wore black for three years in the mourning ritual before she could consider re-marrying. The first year she wore all black and in the 2nd year from her spouses death, she could add brown, or tan trim. In the 3rd year blue and purple trim could be added. This let others know where she was in her mourning cycle. Men only went through a six month mourning period. There were children to raise and that was not a mans job. So he had to re-marry sooner.
The hat is in very good condition and is 8 inches across. I will take better pictures. Black hats are hard to show detail on. Cleaning out granny's / aunts home and coming across many cool hats and accessories.
