Rare French Opaline Perfume Bottles, a set of four mounted onto a Marble Base. French Opaline Glass is opaque and not see through. The glass has a satin feel to the finish.
Four different colors and three of the four perfume bottles still have the glass dauber inside of the hinged tops. Atop the tops are hand painted scenes of different Parisian sites, that you can still visit today.
The marble base is heavy, of course, with a gold gilded legs to support it.
A rare specimen of the type of display of bottles. Only the well-to-do were able to buy such opulence as these perfume bottles. The set is from 1850-1890. It was a time when many wealthy Americans traveled, or sent their sons overseas, to become seasoned and worldly.
This is the type of gift or souvenir they would purchase on their tour of France. Thus the hand painted discs under glass showing the sites of the City of Paris. All the scenes are in great condition and not faded out.
The marble base is 5 inches by 5 inches and the perfume bottles are 4 1/4 inches tall.
In great antique condition with no cracks or chips to the opaline glass bottles. The ornate metal around the glass is still quite gold in color. Not sure what the wrought iron center was used for or if it is a handle to transport.
The exceptions to the great condition is the a bent metal top on the green bottle, one inner glass dauber is amiss, and one metal bottle holder needs gluing back on. I never bothered to do so as it is used for display only. There is some dried glue on the holder/bottle bottom. All hinges work well, and no cracks in the glass over the scenes. The bottles are gorgeous.
A true treasure.
