Tussie Mussie or also called a Posy Holder. An antique accessory meant to hold a small bouquet of flowers while away from home to help with the stench in the air from the realities of everyday life before running water. This tussy mussy seems to be a possible marriage. When Tussie Mussies were selling over several thousand dollars, pieces of old tussie mussies were given a new handle or holder part as these use to be extremely rare prior to the internet.
I know the daughter of the lady that wrote the only book on Tussie Mussie's and she said a tussy mussy, un-altertered, would balance on the finger between the handle and posy part. This one does balance at the middle part of the posey holder but does not balance between holder and handle. This one has a is heavier guilloche handle that has been placed on my means of screwing on the handle rather than than it being one whole piece of metal, gold or silver. Great and beautiful work and quality.
It is perfect condition. especially the handle. The end of the French guilloche enamel handle has a piece of MOP. It's a beautiful example of a tussy mussy and from my collection, but pretty sure it is a marriage, and a beautiful one at that. Another give a way is the chain and pin which extends along with the handle.
This was purchased at an big antique show in Florida over 20 years ago. Before I knew a thing about these beautiful reminders of the past. Many have been made for weddings and perhaps this is a version of one of those.
In the Victorian Days Ladies would stuff a piece of cool moss on the bottom and add there small flowers to make up a fragrant bouquet. The pin would have held in the bouquet and the finger ring to keep from dropping it. I believe the top part to be an authentic Victorian era piece, but the enamel handle is newer.
It is 7 inches long which is an inch longer than most of my other tussie mussies in my collection.
