Victorian Era pin date engraved and marked 1881. It is marked with a date on the bottom and a big capital "A". The little pail that hangs off the brooch is a vinaigrette, and still holds a piece of cotton to absorb perfume. It is gold filled.

The pendant was worn on a collar or chest area and when a lady passed an unpleasant smell or odor she would open the little pail and sniff the contents. People only bathed once every couple of weeks back then. Vinaigrette's helped hide the offensive odors and keep a lady from fainting over smells and heat. You can clearly see the marks on the bottom.

The pendant is in good working order and the little clasp on the pail works well and stays shut. the pendant is 2 " long (5 cm) and the pail is 1/2" tall. (1.7 cm). It is in great condition. The black on the gold metal pendant looks to be enamel. The little pail has an etched design in it. Marked on the bottom Nov. 1, 1881, Pat. Pend and a big "A".
