A more aqua blue than turquoise in color, this stunning necklace is made of howlite stone dyed to a turquoise or more aqua color. Howlite is actually a smoother hard stone that comes in white but is porous enough to dye well and used for lots of turquoise and coral like jewelry. It is an actual gemstone and mined in California and Canada. It can be mixed with resins and dyes to reinforce the stone and to make jewelry with more even colors. The stones have been tumbled and polished.
The necklace has never been worn. I'm selling off an Estate of jewelry where most of the jewelry was never worn and only admired and has been stored for some time.
The turquoise/ aqua beads have an average length of 20 mm or 3/4 of an inch. Each holds a little bit different shape as it is cut from larger stones that have been enhanced to bring you the color and stability. Although made from natural stone it has been manipulated with dyes to bring you this lovely final product! The necklace hangs long at 32 inches. It is a really gorgeous piece with strong, heavy knots between each stone. Marked Made in China on the tag that still remains on the clasp.
The clasp is sterling silver and marked 925. Beautiful necklace. Stone cold...as a natural stone should be.
I've spent quite some time studying "Turquoise" and asking experts. It has been pointed out to me that much of the turquoise is treated. It can still be called "natural" because it is stone, but many times treated with dyes or resins for better color and shape or size or integrity of the stone. It all depends on the look you want!
