Agate box from the 19th Century, likely used for snuff to hold inside a pocket, as small snuff boxes were very popular.
The clasped box is in good condition with minor wear around the side metal filagree.
The stone is made of Scottish Banded Agate. Bands of quarts in this gem of agate in a dark brown, black and white contrasting colors in the agate. I purchased this at a Antique Faire in England awhile back. I purchased several of them while I was there, because I love agate accessories, or anything stone, so I looked for these sweet boxes. The box opens and closes fine. No problems and in great condition.
It is 1 3/4" X 1 1/4" X 3/4" tall. May have been a patch box as well, rather than for Snuff, but a lot of agate boxes were made for snuff...and larger boxes w/ legs were used for desk or dresser size snuff boxes. They are about twice the size as a pocket snuff box.
Purchased in England.
