Large Bowl with Mini Micro Mosaic tiles made between 1850-1900. It is an outstanding piece of art as well as a large Bronze bowl. There are five pieces of mini micro mosaic art, done in Italy during this time period. One cannot look at the artistry of these tiny tiles coming together to magically build a scene of flowers. This is the work of craftsmen in Italy over 100 years ago. Today the craft has continued but not in the tiny tiles like this. Hard to find in the mini micro tiles of yesteryear.
The bowl weighs 5 1/2 lbs. on its own. I believe the metal to be bronze on top with a brass base. Quite heavy and stable. Notice the fittings on the bowl to secure the artful tiled flowers. The mini micro mosaics have great topography across the top, or different levels of the tiles making it 3 dimensional. The mosaics of today, the tiles are much larger and they are all the same elevation or height in the hand work. This had to take days if not weeks to accomplish. I have seen this done in jewelry and some small boxes but never on a bowl.
It's outstanding. It is not perfect, as some of the tiles have been hit on top, however, all the tiles are still there. Amazing. Stunning. If you want it perfect an art restoration place would be able to make that happen. And I will send the tiles to you from another piece I have. But I think it is awesome just like it is. People are awed by it and have never noticed some of the slightly damaged tiles.
I have other pieces of vanity items, such as hand mirrors, frames and boxes that have these smallest of tiles. They are treasures. But even the tiles on those are larger than on this bowl. They didn't do this mini-micro mosaics for that many years! Doing it too much would make people go blind.
Each section of tiled flowers is 1 3/4 inches by 1 1/2 inches The bowl is 13 inches wide from one side to the other and stands at 5 inches tall. The opening or inside part of the bowl is 8 inches across. There is a number on the bottom of the bowl.
I purchased this piece in England and carried it home in my suitcase. It was just too pretty to pass up. I also have a large micro mosaic piece that I will send with this so the tiles can be replaced or added to the top, if you want it perfect. No one has ever noticed it has damaged tiles, but I have to point it out because I know it is there. Stunning. Makes an awesome fruit bowl!
