Antique British Royal Order of the Garter pin. The noblest Order of the Garter is an order of chivalry which King Edward III founded in 1348. The Order of the Garter is the highest order of knighthood in the British honors system that can be obtained militarily or civilly. It's motto "Honi soit qui mal y pense," which translates to, "Shame on him who thinks this evil." The pin coat of arms has the phrase "Dieu et mon droit" which means "god and my right". The Art nouveau era heart-shaped pin measures about 2.5 inches wide by 2 inches tall. I could not find any hallmarks or makers marks. Good antique condition some loss to the blue enamel at the top of the heart(see photos). The back has some tarnish. C style open clasp. The pin is decorated with whiplash and floral motifs typical of the Art Nouveau era. The pin dates to the late 1890's-1910. A beautiful example of rare antique British order of knighthood pin.
