This is a very rare trivet, dating to 1888, that would be of interest to both political memorabilia and trivet collectors. I have not found this trivet in any reference book.
Research reveals that “Our Choice” was the Republican campaign slogan for the 1888 United States presidential ticket of Benjamin Harrison and Levi Morton. Harrison was a popular Republican war veteran from the swing state of Indiana and swept the North and Midwest. Although narrowly losing the popular vote, Harrison defeated incumbent Democratic President Grover Cleveland with an
Electoral College edge of 233 to 168.
I suspect a round celluloid or metal campaign button originally fit within the five-point star, considering the atypical depressed square around the circular opening on the reverse.
