Presented here is a very rare Antique Victorian Mourning cuff made of Vulcanite. This high relief Cameo is of Aurora and the Genius of Light.
The carving is exquisite and extremely rare. The right lower hand has been repaired. (see last photo of before and after). I had another vulcanite piece that was broken and had a floral wreath that was the same size as Aurora. I filed down the two ends, shaped the tip to mimic the hand as in the one above it. I then attached it to the spot where the missing hand was. The bracelet is in excellent condition and completely stable.
Aurora and the Genius of Light is a famous work of Art and this Mourning bracelet is an extremely well crafted miniature of the original. In Roman mythology, Aurora renews herself every morning and flies across the sky.
Mourning jewelry has been around since at least the 16th century, but it is widely associated with the Victorian Era. Mourning jewelry of the late Victorian era (1860s – 1880s) became immensley popular after the loss and grief of Queen Victoria’s husband Prince Albert where she went into Mourning for 2 decades and made it fashionable.
Often called ‘ebonite’, vulcanite was the mass-produced rival to actual jet. It had the ability to be moulded, however the original mold was carved by the artist and then the Vulcanite was poured into the mold. Made from the sap of Malaysian Ficus and Euphorbia rubber trees.
Vulcanite jewelry is very rare and highly collectable. British Origin Circa 1860.
