??? Yes, that was my thought when I first saw this rare little work of Art. And she is a brooch. I have never seen anything like this. My conclusion is Surrealism, in a most true and very fine example. I have attached 2 Paintings by a favorite painter, René Magritte done around the same time this little "dream" brooch was created, 1948 and 1939.
She is gold plated and her jelly belly is a reversed painted Intaglio glass cabochon. The glass is 2D carved into the reverse side and enamel painted while the top is domed. The painting is of a sail boat on the sea. There appear to be 2 tiny persons in the boat.
Spiders represent creativity and creation, patience and persistence. They also represent feminine energy. Sailboats symbolize journey and adventure. They also are associated with being carried along by the “breath of life,” as its primary form of momentum is gained through the wind in its sails. Dreamy Spider brooch is 2.75 inches wide. Circa 1940s. Like you, there is only one.
