Presented here is a very rare and quite extraordinary sterling silver Putti face with wings and 4 or so swirling snakes. The workmanship is intricately detailed and so very fine. The face, wings and snakes appear to be born before our very eyes while all the elements seem to transform into each other and all at once. This little work of Art is pure romance. The combination of the Angel face, snakes and Dragon Fly or Fairy wings are what is so unusual about this find. I have never come across such an unusual piece as this, it could possibly be a mourning piece, due to the rare combination and symbolism of its elements. The pendant was originally a brooch before I removed the C-clasp. The chain is almost as extraordinary as the Angel and so very finely crafted, all the textured links are soldered together holding the open work ovals. It has been tested and confirmed solid Sterling. The c spring clasp is a replacement.
For the Victorians snakes symbolized eternal love. Putti, often depicted as winged infants, are commonly associated with love, joy, and divine presence. Their origins can be traced back to classical antiquity, where they were linked to Eros. Dragonflies are a common feature in Art Nouveau art, and are often used to symbolize the natural and the human's ability to transform. This lovely is loaded with meaning and sentiment and there is only this one. Necklace is 20 inches around, the Putti is nearly 2 inches wide and weighs 27 grams. Putti Circa 1890/Chain Circa 1860
